Here are some known problems that you may need to be aware of.
Long loading time
This catches a lot of people. On all but the fastest computers, it can take sometimes take such a long time for the splash screen to appear that it may seem that you didn't launch the program file correctly.
We used a product called eBookGold to compile the ebook, and unfortunately it doesn't have a sophisticated way of handling very large ebooks, with lots of graphics and audio.
We are looking into ways of improving this and will do so in our subsequent updates.
In the meantime, simply select the Read Thai in a Day program file, press the enter key (rather than double-clicking) and wait... It will start up eventually!
Strange characters, 0 & instead of a square or a little arrow?
This means that you don't have the correct fonts installed. You must download and install the CordiaDSE Thai Font (right-click and "save target as..."), otherwise the Thai characters will not display correctly.
If you do not have any Microsoft Office products installed (Word, Excel, etc.) then you will need to download and install the following fonts: MS Arial Unicode (23MB), Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3 .
If you see & at the end of words, or a large 0 in the main section then it means you don't have these fonts installed.
Installing Fonts on Windows
Once you have downloaded the font files, install them by opening the Fonts folder in the Control Panel. Then select File - Install New Font... and navigate to the folder where you saved the font files:
Make sure the "Copy to Fonts folder" is checked.
Blank Pages or Page Not Loaded
This can sometimes happen if you have a firewall that prevents access to the Trusted Zone, or you have previously set your browser to work offline. Usually, your firewall will warn you that the ebook is trying access the Trusted Zone, in which case please give it permission to do so. Otherwise, you will have to go into the firewall settings and enable access for the ebook file. (Each firewall is different, so you will have to contact your own support team for details on how to do this.)
Also check that "Work Offline" is deselected in Internet Explorer (File Menu).
Using the ebook on a Mac (or Linux)
The ebook is a PC/Windows product. However, you can view the ebook on other machines simply by installing a Windows emulator (such as crossover) and installing the fonts.
No sound and no popup text on mouseover
This usually means that javascript has been disabled in the Internet Explorer security settings. In Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Settings or Control Panel/Internet Settings, modify the security level to Medium, or go to Advanced Settings and enable javascript.
Don't know where to register the ebook
This is done in the ebook itself, not on the website. When you receive your PIN Code, click on the register button on the left menu panel of the ebook and fill in the registration form. If the button is not there then it means that the ebook is already registered.
What if I want to move my ebook or my computer crashes?
Contact us and we will transfer your PIN code. Your PIN is valid for life.
What if you go out of business?
No worries! If this happens, we will publish an ebook that requires no PIN to activate, and which will be freely available to all. (Don't count on this though...)
Understanding how the vowels work
Some people are still a little confused about this. Read the introduction again very carefully and keep the following in mind:
All Thai words (syllables) start with a consonant - without exception. Even if the consonant is a silent one: อ.
Remember in particular that vowels are tacked on to each consonant. The do not follow the left-to-right arrangement we are familiar with in English. The vowel could be tacked on all sides of the consonant: on top, to the left, to the right and underneath.
So when you are reading, home in on the consonant and then see which vowel is tacked on to it. The pronounciation starts with the consonant (even if it is silent) - regardless of where the vowel is.
For example: เค is the letter K with the eh vowel (which happens to be tacked on to the left side of the consonant). So the syllable is Keh (not ehK).
Similarly, คา is Kaah and คู is Kooh and ไค is Kai (not aiK) and คั is Ka.
And for the silent letter, we simply get: เค eh, อา aah, อู ooh, ไอ ai and อั a.
